Construction Underway on FPIP’s New River Water Treatment Facility
First Philippine Industrial Park’s water subsidiary, FPIP Utilities, Incorporated (FUI), proudly announces the groundbreaking of its river water treatment facility, set to ensure a reliable water supply for its current and future locators, as well as its other customers.
The construction of this new facility also aims to address the pressing issue of groundwater depletion and promotes sustainable water management practices.
“Groundwater extraction has been a widespread practice – not just for FPIP but also around the world,” said Engr. Jeremaine Esguerra, FUI Head for Water Resource Management Group. “It seems like the easiest and most accessible solution, but we have come to realize how harmful it can be, not just for our immediate-term business, but for the environment.”
“In fact, we have started experiencing its effects in the previous years – deteriorating quality of water, frequent water interruptions, and rapidly declining levels of water. And these led us to rethink how we source and use water,” she added.
Through the river water treatment facility, FUI will extract water up to 20 million liters per day (MLD) from the San Juan River, a river that flows through FPIP. The extracted water will undergo a thorough treatment process to ensure it is free from small particles, impurities, and pathogens. Once treated, it will be stored and pumped into the distribution system.
In April 2024, Department of Environment and Natural Resources - Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) granted FUI an Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC) for its river water treatment facility and rights to treat up to 20 MLD of water from the San Juan River.
“This river water treatment facility is a testament to our commitment to change and our resolve to be an environmentally-responsible organization. It is part of FPIP’s sustainability roadmap and a key step in our commitment to regeneration and decarbonization,” Engr. Esguerra shared.
